A suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with a joint team of the Rapid Action Battalion and the Border Guard Bangladesh at Kaptanbazar Gomti Embankment under Sadar upazila of Comilla on early Saturday.
The deceased, Sahidul Islam alias Sabu, 32, of village Ekbalia under Sadar Dakhkhin upazila in the district, was named in at least 27 cases, including 20 under the Narcotics Control Act, lodged with different police stations in Comilla, said RAB-11 crimes prevention company-2 commander Ataur Rahman.
With the death of Shahidul, at least 205 suspected drug peddlers were killed during the ongoing anti-drug drive since May 15.
The RAB-11 officer said they conducted a raid at Kaptanbazar Gomti Embankment to arrest Sabu when suspected drug peddlers opened fire on the joint team members, forcing them to retaliate by firing.
As the gunfight was over, he said, they found bullet-hit Sabu and rushed him to Comilla Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
RAB officials said they seized drugs from the spot.
