Severe gas crisis caused sufferings to residents of port city Chittagong on Friday.
Household consumers alleged that they were having difficulty in cooking meals, and even turning on the gas stoves became a challenge because of low pressure in the gas supply line.
Residents of different areas, including Jamal Khan, Khulshi, Askardighir Par, Kazir Dewri, New Market, Laldighi and Bahaddarhat, alleged that they had poor or no gas supply from Friday morning.
They slammed Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited saying that the authority concerned could not cause such suffering to the consumers without any notice. In some houses people used liquefied petroleum gas cylinder, stoves and rice cooker to cook food.
Halishahar resident Tamalika said that as Friday was weekend, they had guests at the house. ‘Due to this inconvenience, we were in an awkward situation and had to go to a Nasirabad restaurant for lunch.’
Mogaltuli resident Sagir Ahmed said that they had dry foods in breakfast as there was no gas supply.
Khulshi home maker Amena Begum said that after 10:00am they could not cook by the gas stove. ‘Later we bought rice and vegetable from a restaurant.’
Peoples thronged to the nearby restaurants to buy food for lunch. The restaurants could not meet the demand.
Some were seen to buy cake, puffed rive, banana etc for lunch.
Gas distribution company officials said that maintenance work was going on from Fauzderhat to entire city and people might continue suffering for next three days.
Company general manager Monjurul Haque said that the maintenance work in main connection was going on. It would be solved in few hours.
According to the company, the current gas supply to Chittagong was below 200 million cubic feet against a demand of about 470 million cubic feet per day.
