Sylhet police on Thursday submitted charges against six persons in a case filed after an attack on Shahjalal University of Science and Technology teacher Muhammad Zafar Iqbal.
Investigation officer in the case Shafiqur Rahman, also the officer-in-charge of Jalalabad police, submitted a 353-page charge sheet to the metropolitan magistrate Haridas Kumar, Sylhet Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner (prosecution) Amulya Kumar Chowdhury confirmed New Age.
He said that prime suspect Fayzul Hasan alias Shafiqur, 24, of Kaliakapan village at Derai upazila in Sunamganj, his father Atiqur Rahman, mother Minara Begum, elder brother Enamul Hasan, maternal uncle Fazlur Rahman and his friend Sohag Miah were indicted in the charge sheet.
Investigating officer Shafiqur told New Age that the six persons have been included in the charge sheet for their direct and indirect involvement in the attack on Zafar Iqbal.
‘We did not find his [Fayzul] link with any extremist group. He became self-radicalised by hearing preaches of different mawlanas and reading write-ups of the Islamist bloggers in the online portals and wanted to kill professor Zafar considering him an atheist,’ he said, adding that 60 people have been named as a witness to the case.
Fayzul stabbed professor Zafar from his back on March 3 on the SUST campus, causing serious injuries in the back of his head.
The university students caught him at the scene and handed him over to the police. SUST registrar Ishfaqul Hossain filed a case with the Jalalabad police on March 4.
Professor Zafar was rushed to the Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital and later he was taken to the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka for better treatment.
An employee of a computer shop at Jallarpar in Sylhet city, Fayzul had been living with his parents at Shekhpara near Kumargaon Bus Terminal in the city.
