Police to submit charge sheet today against 6 people

Sylhet police is going to submit charge sheet to court today accusing 6 people in a case filed for attacking Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Professor Muhammad Zafar Iqbal.
The prime suspect Fayzul Hasan alias Shafiqur, of Kaliakapan village at Derai upazila in Sunamganj, his friend Sohag Miah, son of Sadequr Rahman of Umed Nagar village at the Derai upazila, his father Atiqur Rahman, mother Minara Begum, elder brother Enamul Hasan and maternal uncle Fazlur Rahman were indicted in the charge sheet in the case.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner Paritosh Gosh told the reporters in a press briefing held at the SMP headquarter at Naior Pool in the city in the afternoon.
Fayzul stabbed Professor Zafar Iqbal, a teacher of Computer Science and Engineering department, from his back on March 3 afternoon when he was inspecting the projects displayed in a robotic competition at Muktamancha on SUST campus as part of a two-day festival of the electrical and electronics engineering students, causing serious injuries in the back of his head.
The university students confined the 24-year old attacker Fayzul immediately after the incident and handed him over to police.
Academic Zafar Iqbal was rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital and then he was taken to Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka for better treatment.
Fayzul was an employee of a computer shop at Jallarpar in Sylhet city and he had been living with his parents at Shekhpara near Kumargaon Bus Terminal in the city.
SUST registrar Ishfaqul Hossain filed a case with Jalalabad police on the next day of the incident and officer-in-charge of the police station Shafiqur Rahman was made the investigation officer in the case.
Paritosh told the reporters that Fayzul inspired by the extremism after hearing preaches of different maulanas and reading write-ups of the Islamist bloggers in online portals and started to believe that Professor Zafar Iqbal is an atheist.
‘It is known after analysing the photos taken from the spot, footage of the close circuit cameras on SUST campus, mobile phones’ call lists and other related documents that Fayzul himself took the decision to launch the attack on Professor Zafar Iqbal to kill him,’ the SMP officials said.
He added that the charge sheet is being submitted with the court against 6 persons for their direct and indirect involvement in the attack.
