EC fails to ensure level playing field: Sujan

Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik president M Hafizuddin Khan on Wednesday said that the Election Commission failed to ensure level playing field for all candidates in the upcoming mayoral polls of Rajshahi, Barisal and Sylhet scheduled to be held on July 30.
Addressing a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity on information of the candidates, he said that there was a doubt over holding free and fair elections in the cities.
He said that EC was not taking any action against the government officials, who were taking part in campaigning in favour of the ruling Awami League candidates.
Sujan thought the EC should responsible for not controlling such violation of electoral code of conduct.
Local government expert Tofail Ahmed said that ruling party showing aggressive attitude in the local government polls as the opposition candidates failed to appoint polling agents.
He said that EC started a new trend of controlled election, where one-sided polls were held without any violence.
He urged the EC to scrutinise affidavits of the contestants to ensure quality of the candidacy.
Sujan central coordinator Dilip Kumar Sarkar, its Dhaka metropolitan unit vice-president Camellia Chowdhury, among others, were present at the press conference.
