Two suspected drug peddlers were killed in two incidents of ‘gunfights’ with Rapid Action Battalion members in Khulna and Rajshahi early Wednesday, raising the death toll to 199 in the ongoing nationwide anti-drug drive in Bangladesh since May 15.
The deceased in Khulna, Imran Hossain Rocky, 28, son of Sheikh Mizanur Rahman, of Deyana Modhyapara under Daulatpur police, was named in at least seven cases while the Rajshahi victim, Sazzad Hossain, 42, son of Soyeem Uddin, of Bonpara village under Haripur upazila in Natore district, was wanted in seven cases, RAB officials said.
Family members of Khulna victim Rocky claimed that he was an employee of Rampal Power Plant for the past several months and he remained missing since July 7 afternoon when he was picked up from in front of the power plant gate in a RAB car.
RAB, however, denied the allegation.
New Age correspondent in Khulna, quoting assistant superintendent of police Md Bazlur Rashid of RAB-6, reported that suspected drug peddler Rocky was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with RAB members at a RAB check-post set up at Maheshwarpasha Paschimpara about 1:30am.
The RAB official said that they seized a revolver loaded with three bullets and 308 Yaba tablets from his possession.
The victim’s father Sheikh Mizanur Rahman talking to New Age claimed that his son was an employee of Rampal power plant, not a drug peddler.
He said that plainclothes men picked Rocky up in a RAB car from the gate of the power plant on July 7 about 5:00pm but RAB denied his detention. ‘As he remained missing since then, we lodged a general diary on July 22 with Rampal police station.’
Mizanur said that he himself handed Rocky to police three years earlier when his son was an addict and later he left the path of addiction.
He added that his son was accused in two drug-related cases and was free on bail.
New Age correspondent at Rajshahi University, quoting RAB-5 deputy commander AM Ashraful Islam, reported that suspected drug peddler Sazzad was killed a ‘gunfight’ with RAB at Kosba village under Paba upazila about 12:30am on Wednesday during an anti-drug drive.
The RAB officer said that they seized a firearm, two bullets and a magazine from the spot.
He said that the body of the suspected drug peddler was kept at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
RMCH officials said that nobody came to receive the body until Wednesday evening.
In Dhaka, the metropolitan police in an anti-drug drive at Sutrapur arrested 10 suspected drug peddlers and addicts and seized 215 grams of heroin, 150 Yaba tablets, 300 grams of hemp and 80 litres of local liquor from their possessions on Wednesday, officials said.
In Chittagong, a team of RAB-7 arrested suspected drug peddlers Md Sabuj, 31, of village Pachur Arpara under Kashiani in Gopalganj, and his wife Jahinur Begum, 30, and seized 27,300 Yaba tablets from their possessions at a check-post set up in City Gate area of the port city about 1:30pm on Wednesday.
