Two Bangladeshi films win awards at London fest

Two Bangladeshi films-Haldaa and Bhuban Majhi-won awards at the eight-day 19th Rainbow Film Festival, which ended in London on July 22.
Haldaa, directed by Tauquir Ahmed, won the best director award and liberation war-based film Bhuban Majhi, directed by Fakhrul Arefeen Khan, won the jury board’s special award. Besides, ‘Untaken Paths’ directed by Iranian maker Tahmineh Milani won the best film award.
Aparna Ghosh and Majnun Mijan for their roles in the film Bhuban Majhi won awards as emerging actors.
The film festival, which was hosted by Rainbow Film Society, was inaugurated on July 15 at the Genesis Cinema Hall in East London.
Tower Hamlet Council’s executive mayor John Biggs, counsellor Matinuzzaman, Rainbow Film Festival director Mustafa Kamal, filmmaker Fakhrul Arefeen Khan, actor Majnun Mijan and others were present at the inauguration ceremony as special guests.
Haldaa was screened on the opening day of the festival, which featured 18 films from countries like Britain, Bangladesh, India, Turkey, Algeria, Iran, England, Iceland, Russia and other countries.
Besides, the festival also featured short film screening and discussion on July 16, a film conference for women on July 19 and children’s films on July 20.
The festival ended on July 22 with screening of Bhuban Majhi. The awards ceremony of the festival was held on the last day at Rich Mix Centre. Deputy speaker of Tower Hamlet Council Victoria Obaze, Mustafa Kamal, Rainbow Film Festival’s jury board member Amita Sangkar and others were present at the closing ceremony.
Rainbow Film Society was founded on December 16, 1991 in London with the motto ‘Better Film, Better Audience and Better Society’.
Rainbow Film Society has been promoting Bangladeshi films by organising film workshops, film screenings and more. The organisation has been organising Rainbow Film Festival since 2000.
