Bangladesh Nationalist Party-nominated mayoral candidate in Sylhet City Corporation election Ariful Haque Chowdhury on Monday alleged that police were harassing his party leaders and activists in different ways.
He alleged that police were threatening to arrest the party activists to interrupt his election campaign.
He alleged that police were doing these to create panic among the city people ahead of the city corporation election scheduled for July 30.
He said Election Commission did not take any step, despite repeated complaints in this regard.
Arif came up with the allegations while he was addressing a press conference at his main election office in the city’s Shah Eidgah area in the afternoon.
He said that former district president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Sayeed Ahmad Sayeed, the party’s small loan affair assistant secretary Abdur Razzak’s son Rumman Razzak, who was not involved in political activities, and the city JCD activist Enamul Haque and Junel Ahmad were picked up from their residents early Monday without any arrest warrant.
Arif said that he was very anxious about the safety of his party men and his election campaigners.
He threatened to launch a social movement to resist the evil forces, who were engaged in destroying the political and religious harmony in Sylhet through harassing the BNP leaders and activists.
He said a few number of police officials, including Shah Paran police station officer-in-charge Akhtar Hossain, were intentionally harassing the BNP activists.
BNP central organising secretary Sakhawat Hasan Jiban, Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal president Afroza Abbas, BNP central assistant organising secretary Dildar Hossain Selim, its small loan affair assistant secretary Abdur Razzak, the city BNP president Nasim Hossain and district general secretary Ali Ahmed, among others, were presnt at the press conference.
Shah Paran police OC Akhtar Hossain admitted that they arrested JCD former president Sayeed and Rumman from their residents early Monday as they were wanted in cases filed for criminal offences. He, however, rejected the complaint of detaining the JCD activist Enamul and Junel.
Earlier on Sunday night, Shah Paran police assistant sub-inspector Fayez Ahmad filed a case against some 100 BNP leaders and activists on charge of creating obstacle to discharging police duties.
BNP chairperson’s adviser Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, its small loan affair assistant secretary Abdur Razzak, central executive member Shahriar Hossain Chowdhury, the district president Abul Kaher Shamim, city president Nasim Hossain, district general secretary Ali Ahmed and organising secretary Emran Ahmad, among others, are the named accused in the case, the police official said.
On Saturday afternoon, Arif and his party leaders staged a 2-hour sit-in in front of the office of Sylhet Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner (south) Azbahar Ali Sheikh, demanding release of two BNP activists, who were arrested in a case filed with Osmani Nagar police station.
