BNP mayoral candidate in Barisal on Sunday demanded army deployment to ensure peaceful mayoral polls slated for July 30.
New Age correspondent in Barisal reported that BNP mayoral candidate Mujibur Rahman Sarwar said that ruling Awami League men were crating lawlessness to frighten the voters and city dwellers.
He was electioneering at Chakbazar area in the city.
On Sunday, the returning officer issued show cause notices asking mayor candidates of AL, BNP and Islami Andolon Bangladesh to explain why they were exploiting religious sentiments in their campaigns violating the electoral code of conduct.
Newly elected Gazipur City mayor Jahangir Alam on Sunday joined the campaigns of Serniabad Sadik Abdullah, AL mayoral candidate in Barisal.
New Age staff correspondent in Sylhet reported that miscreants set fire to a campaigning office of ruling AL’s mayoral candidate Badar Uddin Ahmad Kamran in the Sylhet on Sunday in the early hours.
Locals said that they saw that the fire broke out from inside Kamran’s election office at about 3 AM.
As the news spread, people from nearby homes rushed to the spot and doused the fire in about 15 minutes, they said.
Kamran rushed to the spot with his election management committee member secretary Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury and other local AL leaders.
They condemned the incident and demanded immediate steps to bring the offenders to book.
Shah Paran police station officer-in-charge Akhtar Hossain told New Age that they visited the spot and took legal steps.
