The Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks of industries ministry has already published a journal as is required by the law before issuing the GI certificate.
A senior DPDT official on Sunday told New Age that the journal was published on June 10 and the mango variety would be registered as GI products of Chapainawabganj of Bangladesh if none from home and abroad raised any objection within two months of publication of the journal.
Usually, none ever raised objection to such issues as there was no debate about the place of origin of the product, he said, adding that they were hopeful about issuing the certificate after August 10 following expiration of the deadline.
According to the DPDT Journal, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute at Joydebpur in Gazipur made the application in February 2017 for inclusion of Khirsapat as a GI product on behalf of the growers in Chapainawabganj.
Khirsapat, a medium-sized and oval-shaped fruit, is a very popular variety of mango and widely commercially cultivated in all over the district along with some other districts like Rajshahi and Sathkhira.
The fruit is, however, mostly produced in Shibganj, Bholahat and Gomastapur upazilas in the district.
BARI has the proof of Khirsapat mango being a GI product of the district since 1955.
India has also registered the Khirsapat as GI product of West Bengal.
A GI is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin (e.g. a town, region, or country), says Wikipedia.
DPDT officials say that the use of GI increases the value of product and it brings additional premium in price.
Local mango growers will be able to claim better price for Khirsapat mango using the GI certified product, they say.
According to the website of the Chapainawabganj district administration, BARI also applied for GI registration for Ashwhina and Langra, two famous varieties of mangos grown and cultivated in the district.
Mangos were cultivated in around 26,150 hectors of land in 2017. Some 2.40 tonnes of mangos of 48 varieties were produced in the district in 2016, the highest in a single district.
DPDT in 2016 first registered Jamdani as GI product while Hilsa got the recognition in 2017.
Some 30 products including different varieties of mangos are in the queue for getting GI certificates as different public and private bodies applied for the GI tags for the products.
