Indian troupe Amta Parichoy will stage Eladidi today at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, as part of the 2nd Dhaka International Monodrama Festival.
The eight-day event, which will feature a total of 11 monodramas, has been organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and International Theatre Institute’s Bangladesh Chapter, with help from the ministry of cultural affairs.
Eladidi features the story of Mukti, an ordinary girl from an ordinary family, who encounters problems that are at once complicated and quite universal.
Mukti, a student of a primary school, cherishes the dream of becoming like Ela, who lives in the same neighbourhood and is beautiful and talented.
Through the connected story of Mukti and Ela, the play addresses different problems in the patriarchal society such as dowry, domestic violence, unemployment, tension surrounding the protection of a family’s honour and prestige and its effect on women, and so on.
Rituparna Biswas stars in Eladidi, which has been directed by Subhendu Bhandari.
