University Grants Commission chairman professor Abdul Mannan received a death threat letter on Tuesday, said officials.
UGC security officer Syed Ashrafuzzaman filed a general diary with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station in this regard on Wednesday morning.
In the general dairy, he also sought security measures for the UGC chairman and its establishments.
Professor Mannan said that someone identifying himself as Nur Hossain, claiming to be a resident of Savar, sent the letter to the UGC chairman’s office over general post.
He said that the letter sender made some absurd comments and termed him as ‘number one agent of RAW’. RAW stands for Research and Analysis Wing, India’s external intelligence agency.
Mannan said that the sender also termed him as ‘one of the perpetrators of atrocious carnage in Pilkhana BDR Headquarters in the capital on February 25, 2009’.
A total of 74 people, including 57 army officers, were killed in the carnage on the day in 2009.
The sender also wrote that Mannan had made illegal wealth and that he had information provided by a government agency that the UGC chairman had made wealth of Tk 10 crore through corruption, Mannan added.
‘Your punishment should be death by hanging in front of Baitul Mukarram [National Mosque]’ Mannan quoted from the death threat letter.
A former vice-chancellor of Chittagong University, Mannan was appointed the UGC chairman in May 2015.
