A suspected stalker stabbed college principal and a peon in Habiganj on Tuesday afternoon after the principal reprimanded him for reportedly harassing a female student.
Nabiganj Degree College principal Golam Hossain Azad and peon Fayzur Rahman were primarily hospitalised at Nabiganj upazila health complex, but later shifted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
College students caught and handed over Humayun Kabir, an accomplice of attacker Dipan Ahmad Munna, to police after catching him on the campus following the incident.
Students and witnesses said Munna, son of Nuruzzaman Faruki of Madanpur village of Nabiganj, had been stalking and harassing a bachelor’s second year student of the college for last few months.
The victim on Monday made a complaint to the principal about the harassment she was facing on the campus and in the area after Munna forcibly tried to take a selfie with the victim in the college on the day.
The principal called Munna in his room on Tuesday and scolded him over the issue.
He asked Munna not to harass the girl and warned him of consequences.
Munna, however, got angry with the principal and swooped on him.
He stabbed in the principal’s shoulder and neck with a knife.
Peon Fayzur was also stabbed at the time as he tried to resist Munna, students said.
The female student, who was present in the principal’s room at that time, also sustained injuries while she tried to escape the scene, they said.
Noticing the incident, student rushed in and confined Humayun, but Munna managed to flee the scene by his motorcycle, they said.
The agitated students staged demonstration blocking a road in front of the college protesting at the incident and demanded arrest of the attackers within next 24 hours.
Nabiganj police station officer-in-charge Ataur Rahman said cops had already visited the spot and were trying to catch the suspects.
