Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said the Election Commission has no ‘strength and ability’ to hold a single election in fair manner.
The EC is now being run by its secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed, Fakhrul said while addressing a meeting at the National Press Club in Dhaka.
Former student leaders under the banner of ‘DUCSU of 1990 and All Party Student Unity’ organised the meeting to step up its demand for proper treatment and unconditional release of BNP’s chairperson Khaleda Zia and for scrapping her conviction.
Fakhurl alleged that EC secretary Helal Uddin after attending his office till 4:00pm goes to a special office of a certain party.
He indicated the ruling Awami League without naming it.
Fakhrul said the special office, led by HT Imam, was being used for that party’s election plan.
He said HT Imam, the adviser to the prime minister, always used to sit with the Election Commission before each election.
Fakhrul said HT Imam had recently claimed that he accomplished the January 5, 2014 general election using the EC officials.
The secretary general said Khaleda Zia was sentenced to jail as part of a plan to eliminate her from politics.
Fakhrul, however, reiterated that BNP would not go to any election without freeing Khaleda Zia from jail.
He, however, laid down a couple of conditions, under which BNP would join the next election, namely a level playing field for all, dissolution of parliament, poll-time neutral government and deployment of army during election.
But above all, release of Khaleda and all other political prisoners and withdrawal of all cases against them must be met, he said.
The BNP secretary general came down hard on the Dhaka University authorities for imposing restriction on holding rally and meeting on the campus.
He said as if the country went back to the regime of Pakistan military ruler Ayub Khan.
Fakhrul said Dhaka University is the place for free thinking and the university had always showed path to people of Bangladesh, saying now the university is fettered and would not allow to speak.
He said new restriction imposed in the university is also the part of the government’s deep rooted ‘conspiracy’.
Presided over by former DUCSU vice-president, Amanullah Aman, also BNP chairperson’s adviser, former student leaders and presently BNP leaders including Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Habibur Rahman Habib, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Nazimuddin Alam and Democratic League general secretary Saifuddin Ahmed Moni addressed the gathering.
