A suspected drug peddler was found dead in the Shariatpur district town early Monday, said police.
In Rajshahi another suspected peddler was killed allegedly in a ‘gunfight’ with the police at the same time, police said.
At Shariatpur, Kalu Sikder’s body was found by the road side at Kashipur Bottola under the Palanag thana on the Shariatpur-Madaripur Road early Monday, according to Shariatpur police.
Family members said that Kalu was missing since Friday evening when the DB police in plainclothes picked him up from a house near the Shariatpur Municipality.
Son of Siraj Sikder, Kalu came from Bilaskhan in the district town.
New Age Shariatpur correspondent reported quoting police superintendent Abdul Momen that drug peddler Kalu might have been killed in a gunfight between two drug peddler groups.
According to Kalu’s paternal uncle Selim Sikder plainclothes men identifying themselves as Detective Branch of police along with a man from Palang Bazaar had picked up Kalu from Khokon Shah’s residence at Khelsi in the district town on Friday evening.
Selim said that when family members went to the district DB office and Palang police station but they denied having detained anyone with the name of Kalu.
On Saturday, he said, they went to Palang police station to lodge a general diary regarding Kalu’s missing but they refused to record the GD.
Kalu’s mother Shanti Begum said that Rashed Sardar, a villager of Chandsar under Palang police station, demanded Tk 50,000 for his release but they failed to pay the money. ‘Police murdered my son as we failed to pay the ransom.’
‘I demand justice,’ she said.
But Rashed denied the allegation.
SP Momen also denied that the DB had picked up or detained Kalu.
In Rajshahi, Matiur Rahman Moti, 30, son of Amir of Charkanapara, Godagari, Rajshahi suffered bullet injuries allegedly in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Baliadaing, reported New Age RU correspondent, quoting Rajshahi district senior assistant superintendent of police Abdur Razzak.
The report says that the suspected drug peddler received bullet injuries during the alleged gunfight at Baliadaing, Godagari upazila in Rajshahi at about 3:00am and he was immediately rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
RMCH officials said Mati was admitted to the hospital at about 4:00pm with bullet injuries in his both legs.
ASP Razzak claimed that they seized 200 grams of heroin and three sharp weapons from the spot.
The latest ‘gunfight’ casualty increased the toll to 173 in the ongoing countrywide anti-drug drive since May 15.
Most of them were killed in ‘gunfights’ with the police and the Rapid Action Battalion.
