Three tourists went missing on Friday afternoon in Bashbaria beach under Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong.
The victims were Saiful Islam, 27, Alauddin, 25 and Yasin, 19, of the port city’s Jautala area.
Sitakunda Fire Service and Civil Defence station officer Wasi Azad told New Age that two of the missing persons were cleaning staff of Chittagong City Corporation and one was a press employee.
According to Wasi, about 30 people went to the beach in the afternoon. Some went to bathe in the bay while others were playing football in the beach. As the trio did not come back from the sea after one hour, others informed locals and the fire service.
The locals around 3:30pm launched a rescue operation with boats but could not locate them.
A fire service team rushed to the spot and joined the rescue operation.
‘Due to ebb, it was hard to continue the operation and we will search again at night,’ said Wasi.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Torikul Alam told New Age that the tourists had gone for swimming when the beach guards were on lunch break.
‘Few days earlier, we hung red flags and awareness banners there to avert any further accidents. But tourists sometimes do not listen to these instructions,’ the UNO said.
Sitakunds upazila chairman SM Al Mamun told New Age that huge tourists gathered in the beach on the weekends and some of them were recklessly putting their lives at risk.
On June 22, bodies of two cousins were recovered from the Bashbaria beach after they went missing while swimming in the bay. The incident
prompted local administration to shut down the tourist spot.
