A suspected drug peddler was killed in ‘gunfight’ with the police’s detective branch personnel at Shambhuganj, Mymensingh early Tuesday, the police claimed.
Mymensingh district DB officer-in-charge Ashiqur Rahman identified the suspected drug peddler as 45-year old Bachchu alias Bhebel Bachchu. He said that Bachchu was wanted in at least 15 drug-related cases.
The DB official claimed that a team of detectives, on a tip off that a gang of drug peddlers had gathered at Shambuganj to share their drug money, raided the spot at around 2:45am.
Sensing presence of police, the drug peddlers hurled brick bats on them and later opened fire, forcing the police to retaliate, he claimed.
As the ‘gunfight’ ended, he said, they found bullet-hit Bachchu and rushed him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
He claimed that the DB recovered 200 Yaba tablets and four bullets from the spot.
The latest casualty increased the death toll to 167 in the ongoing countrywide anti-drug drive since May 15.
Most of them were killed in ‘gunfights’ with the police and the Rapid Action Battalion, said police.
