The High Court on Sunday asked the government to explain in two weeks why the ninth wage board for journalists and newspapers employees would not be declared illegal.
The court, however, refused to issue stay of further proceedings in the wage board.
A bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Ashraful Kamal issued the ruling after hearing a writ petition filed by Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh challenging the legality of the wage board.
Secretaries of the ministries of information and labour and the president
of wage board, Md Nizamul Haq, were asked to respond to the ruling in two weeks.
Petitioner lawyer Yousuf Ali submitted in the court that ninth wage board was formed by information ministry illegally.
The lawyer argued that it was the labour ministry’s duty to form the wage board.
