Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed on Sunday criticised US ambassador Mercia Bernicat for her remarks over the irregularities in Gazipur and Khulna mayoral polls held recently.
‘The remark of the US ambassador over the city corporation election to Gazipur and Khulna is not appropriate,’ the commerce minister told reporters following a meeting with British minister Mark Field at Bangladesh Secretariat.
Tofail said that Gazipur and Khulna city corporation elections did not create any big controversies, rather there were still controversies over the US presidential election held in 2016.
‘Her remarks over the elections were unexpected. An ambassador of a foreign country cannot make any comment over the internal issue of a country,’ Tofail said.
He claimed that the elections were free and fear and even BNP could not raise any specific question over the two city corporation elections.
The US ambassador at an event on June 28, organised by Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh at National Press Club in Dhaka, expressed her concern over the irregularities during the city corporation election in Gazipur and Khulna.
She also expressed her concern regarding the national election this year and urged the government of Bangladesh to fulfil its commitment to holding a free, fair, participatory and credible election addressing the core problems.
The commerce minister also said that the incumbents did not give a damn to the comments made by the ambassador of a foreign country.
