Commerce ministry has initiated a move to formulate another set of guidelines for the e-commerce sector so that there was no contradiction in government policy hurting the sector.
The decision was made in a recent meeting at the commerce ministry with the ministry’s WTO cell director general Md Munir Chowdhury in the chair, an official of the ministry told New Age on Tuesday.
Officials of the industry ministry along with representatives from e-commerce association were also present at the meeting.
Although the ICT ministry has some role regarding the e-commerce sector, commerce ministry was the ministry concerned with facilitating businesses, officials of the ministry said.
The main goal of formulation of the guidelines would be to facilitate the growth of the e-commerce sector, the ministry officials said.
Besides, avoiding complexity due to decisions of government’s different ministries and departments was among other reasons for the move to formulate guidelines for the sector, they said.
Under the move, a committee comprising industry minister would formulate the guidelines in consultation with the stakeholders.
‘Although the ICT ministry was on way to finalise a set of guidelines for the sector, we hope that the commerce ministry’s guidelines would focus on facilitating cross border businesses,’ E-CAB vice-president Rezwanul Haque Jami told New Age.
Asked whether two separate guidelines would create any complexity for the e-commerce sector, Jami hoped that both the guidelines would complement each other along with eliminating hindrances.
At present, e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh has more than 750 e-commerce entrepreneurs listed with it, while another 25,000 facebook-based entrepreneurs were also running their e-commerce businesses, as per data of e-CAB.
As per the data of the association, 25,000 online orders were delivered annually through e-commerce outlets.
Although there is no specific data regarding the growth of the e-commerce sector, Kaymu.com.bd, a multinational e-commerce entity, in its report titled ‘A Report on E-Commerce Trends in Bangladesh’ said that the e-commerce business was growing day by day in Bangladesh.
It also said that such business would increase 10 per cent annually in Bangladesh.
