Chittagong-based theatre troupe Nandimukh staged two shows of Amar Ami, a biographical monodrama based on the pioneer theatre actress of the region Binodini Dasi at Zilla Shilpakala Academy, Chittagong.
The first show was staged on June 24 and the second show was staged on June 25.
The play, which is the 14th production of the troupe, has been penned and directed by former chairman of the theatre department of Chittagong University Ashim Das.
Dipta Rakshit enacted the character of Binodini Dasi in the play.
Binodini Dasi was born in 1863. She began her acting career in 1874 through the play Shatrusanghar. The actress won the hearts of the audience with in very short time. She enacted over eighty roles including Pramila, Sita, Draupadi, Radha, Ayesha, Kaikeyi, Motibibi, and Kapalkundala and others. She left acting on January 1887.
Amar Ami depicts the life and works of Binodini Dasi as found in her autobiographies namely Amar Katha, Amar Khata and Amar Abhinetri Jibon. The monodrama brings to light life struggles of Binodini Dasi and investigates how she was exploited by her mentor Girish Chandra Ghosh.
‘Through the play I wish to depict the theatrical journey and struggles of Binodini Dasi,’ said Ashim Das.
