Three more suspected drug peddlers were killed in three districts on Saturday, the police said.
In the ongoing nationwide anti-drug drive a suspected drug peddler was killed in ‘gunfight’ with police in Sirajganj, they said.
According to the police, a suspected drug peddler was killed in gunfight between two alleged groups of drug peddlers in Tangail while in Chuadanga bullet-hit body of a suspected peddler was recovered by the police.
The latest casualties increased the toll to 162 in the ongoing countrywide anti-drug drive since May 15.
New Age correspondent in Tangail, quoting Sadar police station officer-in-charge Sayedur Rarhman, reported that Abdul Mannan, 45, of Kandapra auto-rickshaw stand in the district town died allegedly in a ‘gunfight’ between two groups of suspected drug peddlers at Charabari early Saturday.
The OC said that they also seized a firearm, six bullets and 200 Yaba tablets from the spot.
Our Correspondent in Sirajganj, quoting Sadar police station OC Mohammad Daud, reported that suspected drug peddler Jahangir Hossain, 32, of Mahmudpur Railway Colony in the district town, wanted in at least seven drug related cases, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Sirajganj district town early Saturday.
The OC said that they seized a revolver, four bullets, 105 Yaba tablets and 25 bottles of phenesedyl from the spot.
Locals said that the victim came from a very poor family and was a petty peddler and the locally big drug dealers were either in jail or absconding.
In Chuadanga, police said that they recovered the bullet-hit body of Oltu Mandal, 27, of village Gobindapur, Alamdanga.
Oltu was wanted in at least 12 cases and that they recovered his body at Satkapat area in the Alamdanga upazila township Saturday morning, said Alamdanga police station officer-in-charge Abu Jihad Fakhrul Alam Khan told New Age.
Chuadanga superintendent of police Mahabubur Rahman said they primarily suspected that Oltu might have been killed over disputes relating to sharing drug sale proceeds.
Until Saturday, about 29,000 suspected drug peddlers and addicts were arrested by the police and the Rapid Action Battalion, according to their accounts.
The police’s anti-drug drive began on May 18 while the RAB’s drive kicked off on May 4.
In the capital, Dhaka Metropolitan Police raided Kotbari, Faidabad, Chouarirtek, Balurmath and Madhubagh areas under the Dakhkhinkhan police station Saturday afternoon and arrested 17 addicts and peddlers and seized 2 daggers, 237 Yaba tablets and 500 grams of hemp from their possession.
Besides, in 24 hours ending Saturday 6:00am, DMP arrested 46 drug peddlers and addicts from different areas in the capital, DMP officials said.
In Natore, a suspected drug peddler Zahidul Islam Zahid from Jalanda village under Boraigram upazila in the district was snatched from police custody by his cohorts Saturday afternoon by attacking the policemen in which two assistant sub inspectors- Shiblu and Motiur- were injured, said officer-in-charge of Boraigram Police Station Dilip Kumar Das.
In Munshiganj, police arrested district Chattra League vice-president Md Maksud and his two associates Mridul Dewan and Md Faisal from Joginighat area of the town at about 1:30am and seized ‘some’ yaba tablets and a microbus they used to carry drugs, said Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station.
Mridul is the president of the Munshiganj district unit of Tarun League.
