Bodies of two youths who went missing on Thursday were recovered from a privately-run Bashbaria beach under Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong on Friday afternoon.
The victims, Nazmul Hasan Emon, 19, an 11th grade student of Shanarpara School and College in Narayanganj, and Shafayat Hossain Raj, 16, a 10th grade student of the same school, were cousins and residents of Shanarpara under Siddhirganj thana in Narayanganj.
On Thursday, nine friends of 16 to 22 years of age went to Bashbaria beach from Shanarpara for holidaying.
Fire Service deputy assistant director Kamal Uddin Bhuiyan said that the nine youths went to the sea for taking shower during the ebb and then two of them went missing.
A Fire Service rescue team was sent to the spot at 3:30pm.
On Friday afternoon, the rescue team recovered the bodies of the two missing youths.
Locals alleged that an influential man in the area was running the tourist spot without any license. By constructing a bamboo bridge and hanging a giant signboard at the entrance to the beach, his man has been charging Tk 130 from each visitor, they said.
Sitakunda upazila nirbahi officer Tarikul Alam said that when the youths went to the sea for shower they had not been warned about the depth of the sea.
There were no red signals, no tourist police, no caution on tide and ebb, and also no speed boat or safety boat in the beach, he said.
He informed that that deputy commissioner of Chittagong ordered an immediately shutdown of the tourist spot. ‘We have also appointed security officials so that none can go to the beach.’
