WHAT can be better than some miniature glittery lamps to give your home a warm, soothing touch? The charming little lamps from Florus Aurum can surely come in handy to create such an ambiance. These small lamps made with tiny LED lights could easily be mistaken for fireflies in a jar. These jars will bring back memories of breezy evenings from your childhood and the nostalgia of catching fireflies in a jar.
The lamps come in various sizes and shapes. Most of them have warm LED light strings with quotes, symbols or pictures. They often include quotes from popular franchises like Feluda, Batman, Harry potter, etc. You can even get it customized with your choice of designs. Each lamp costs between Tk 595 to Tk 1000 and the lights come in various colours as well. Since opening in December 2016, Florus Aurum has been gaining popularity through their wondeful products. It is the brainchild of three friends Shahriar Sakif, Khondoker Mashuk and Ragib Shahriar Evan who were looking to start a business venture together. Mashuk is a business student currently in his senior year at IBA, Dhaka University, Shahriar is finishing his LLB from LCLS (South) under the University of London International program, and Evan has freshly graduated from BUP, completing his internship at Unilever Bangladesh.
Regarding the main idea behind Florus Aurum, Khondoker Mashuk says, ‘Lumen architecture is broadly used in interior or exterior lighting design in buildings. The heart of the concept is that we like to express crafts built with light using lumen craftsmanship.’
The name of the page is quite interesting in itself. At first they thought of the name Florus, meaning bright or shiny in Latin.
But it seemed incomplete. This is where it got interesting. Mashuk shares, ‘When we were searching for the lights for our lamps, we went to look for our signature warm white lights. The sellers kept calling it Aurum or Oram lights. We later discovered that Oram was actually a distorted pronunciation of Warm! However Aurum also means gold or golden in Latin. So, we decided to combine the two words of our choice and named the business Florus Aurum.’
The naming wasn’t the hardest part though, finding the right material was a mammoth task. After finding the low power consuming lights which don’t heat up, and creating moisture-proof stickers, the bulk production of these cute little lamps began. Their big breakthrough came at the event ‘Jete chao? presents Cookups Baker’s Street’ at CityScape Tower in Gulshan in October, 2017. People were amazed by the concept and the uniqueness of the products. Currently, Florus Aurum is running as a Facebook page without any physical outlet but you can spot them at various events around the capital showcasing their products.
