A writer is groaning at Dhaka Medical College Hospital with severe injuries being hammered for organising villagers against misdeeds of a man, reportedly an activists of the ruling Awami League, at his village in Tangail on Monday.
The left arm of Mehedi Hasan, a Dhaka University graduate and former central leader of Bangladesh Students Union, was broken in parts, the abdomen was cut and the whole body was hammered by reported AL activist Golam Mostafa and his associates at Alu Pakutia of Ghatail upazila on Monday.
Golam Mostafa, also a follower of AL lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, now in jail in a double-murder case, wanted to eliminate him for organising villagers against exploitation by Mostafa, alleged Mehedi.
Mehedi resides in Dhaka and earns his living with writing and translating.
He went to his village to celebrate Eid, when Mostafa and his associates beat him up, he said.
He was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital by Kalihati Upazila Health Complex where he was rushed by villagers.
Mehedi said that he maintained close connection with his village and was vocal against social injustice by Mostafa.
‘A typical village schemer, Mostafa pokes his nose in every social dispute and exploits the villagers,’ he added.
‘An enmity developed with Mostafa since 2016 over my role in mobilising villagers against the exploitation by Mostafa,’ he told New Age on Tuesday.
Mehedi said that he organised villagers against Mostafa and his associates for their bid to cover up a village murder in 2016, plot to postpone a Victory Day programme in 2016, bid to cover up rape of a village woman in 2017, extortion of Tk 2 lakh from villagers for ‘round-the-clock electricity’
in 2017 and the death of a woman in electrocution in a paddy field caused by illegal connection by Mostafa.
Recently Mostafa and his associates issued death threat to Mehedi which was reported in different local and online newspapers, blogs and social media, Mehedi said.
‘They threatened my family members that I would be killed when I would go to village during Eid holidays,’ he said.
Mehedi’s father filed an attempted murder case with Ghatail police station Monday night against Motafa, his brother Majnu, cousin Shafiqul Islam and associates Azmat Ali Pangas, Abdul Latif, Apel, Nazrul and four to five unnamed people.
Ghatail police station officer-in-charge Maksudul Alam said the accused went into hiding.
Ghatail Upazila unit AL convener Shahidul Islam Lebu said that he heard about the incident and Golam Mostafa was known to him.
‘But’, he said, ‘Golam Mostafa has no relation with AL.’
