Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party including its secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee members were unable to meet jailed party chairperson Khaleda Zia at the former Dhaka Central Jail in old Dhaka on the Eid day on Saturday.
The jail authorities did not allow them to meet the jail chairperson.
An irritated Fakhrul branded the denial of meeting the ailing party chief even on the Eid day as ‘shocking’. He said they would free the chairperson through movement.
Fakhrul said they went to visit the party chief to exchange Eid greetings.
At around 11:00am, several hundred activists gathered in front of the jail and senior leaders including Mirza Fakhurl, Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan, Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy came around noon.
They talked to police officers and jail officials but they did not allow the leaders to enter the jail.
After waiting for some time, the leaders went back.
Khaleda was sentenced to five years in jail in a graft case on February 8 by a special judge’s court in Dhaka and was sent to the former Dhaka Central Jail at Nazimuddin Road. ি
