A thirty-second fierce tornado hit Chittagong port area Thursday morning which broke down anchor of a foreign ship, fencing wall of dock office and injured 8 workers.
Deputy traffic manager of port, Md Sarowarul Islam, told New Age that it was a violent tornado. ‘But we were safe as it continued for only 30 seconds.’
Around 9:00am Thursday morning, the tornado hit Chittagong port area.
The anchor of the container laden foreign ship MV OEL Straights broke down and went into the middle of the River Karnaphuli.
Chittagong Port Authority secretary Omar Faruk told New Age that the tornado hastily messed up 50 empty containers which were kept in order in container yards.
The tornado collapsed the dock office fencing wall and blew away the covers of 9, 12 and 13 sheds of jetty no 5 of Chittagong port. ‘Later, we have re-arranged the empty containers and recovered the foreign ship with the help of tug boat, said the port secretary, adding, ‘The injured workers took primary treatment.’
