The Election Commission on Tuesday cancelled the registration of Oikyabaddha Nagarik Andolan as a listed political party and also rejected an application of Trinomul BNP for registration.
The EC took the decisions in a meeting headed by chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda at the Nirbachon Bhavan in the capital, EC secretary M Helaluddin Ahmed told reporters.
He said that the commission cancelled the registration of Oikyabaddha Nagarik Andolan as the party failed to submit its activity reports and some other documents sought by the commission.
The rest of the 39 registered parties provided the documents, he said.
He said that the EC also rejected the application of former Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Nazmul Huda’s Trinomul BNP after it had reviewed the application of the party.
Nazmul Huda filed his application after the deadline of application submission by the parties ended on December 31, 2017.
Earlier, the EC cancelled the registration of Freedom Party as the party failed to submit its amended constitution in 2009, the EC secretary said.
In 2013, the EC suspended the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami following a High Court directive.
This year, the commission selected only two parties — the Bangladesh Congress and the Gana Azadi League — for further field-level investigation, out of 76 applications for party registrations.
