The cabinet committee on national purchases on Tuesday approved procurement of equipments of Tk 236 crore to strengthen tapping of phone and surveillance of social media.
A meeting of the committee chaired by industries minister Amir Hossain Amu approved the proposal place by National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre under the ministry of home affairs, additional secretary Mostafizur Rahman said at a briefing.
According to the proposal, the proposed purchase would enable the telecom monitoring centre to upgrade the interception technology and control all telecom operators.
The upgrading of the centre is imperative as parliament members have asked the home ministry to enhance monitoring of social media to safeguard the national security, added the proposal.
The centre would procure equipments in four lots from three suppliers on direct purchase.
Speedpial Trading LLC will supply ‘remote call interception’ machinery, Ezy Infotech Pte Ltd will supply ‘rogue BTS identification’ machinery and ‘dark and deep web monitoring’ tools and Spider Digital Innovation FZE will provide ‘content blocking and filtering’ kits.
The purchase committee also approved 16 other proposals including procurement of four gantry cranes worth Tk 243 crore for Chittagong Port Authority.
The cranes would be supplied by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company Limited of China.
In October, the Chittagong Port Authority struck a deal with the Chinese firm to buy six gantry cranes for the New Mooring Container Terminal to improve container handling.
Besides, the committee approved procurement surveillance equipments for the Border Guards of Bangladesh.
