Stagnant water due to torrential rain and tidal flood in the low-lying areas in Chittagong city has been causing immense sufferings to people, with hospitals, schools, offices and houses facing inundation for last three days.
Till Tuesday, patients and their relatives were seen facing serious troubles at Chittagong Maa O Shishu Hospital as the ground floor was flooded by rain water.
Jubair Rahman, a businessman of the city’s Ambagan, told New Age that his boy was undergoing treatment in pediatric ward for the last two weeks.
‘The three days rain made this area risky and unhealthy but nothing to do. As this is the flood of development,’ he said in a tone of sarcasm.
Munii Akhter, a housewife of CDA residential area, said that they were suffering for water-stagnation for the last five years but none gave it a damn.
Like Agrabad CDA and Jamburi field area, residents of Bohoddarhat, Muradpur, Agrabad CGS colony, government colony, Bohutola Colony, Sonali Bank Officers colony, Muradpur, Chawkbazar and Bakolia have been suffering for the last three days.
All kinds of activities of Bakolia Government High School have been suspended as the school’s ground floor went under knee-deep water amid incessant rainfall.
Residents of adjacent Syed Shah Road, DC road, Kalamia Bazar, Boro Mia Mosjid, Chawkbazar and Dhonirpool areas have been suffering a lot because of stagnant rain water.
Patenga met office recorded 229.4 millimetre of rainfall in 24 hours since Monday 3:00pm.
