Factory workers block Dhaka-Mymensingh highway seeking arrears

Police fired teargas shells and charged batons to disperse agitated workers of two factories who blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Mulaid and Gargaria Masterbari in Gaizipur on Tuesday.

The separate agitation of the workers of two factories demanding their arrear wages and festival allowance triggered severe traffic congestion on the highway.

Industrial police inspector Habibur Rahman said workers of Paradise Group were demanding their arrear wages of two months and festival allowance but there was no response from the owners. They got mobilized in the morning and blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh higway beside the factories at Mulaid of Sreepur.

Later, after police negotiated with the owners and they assured payment of arrears soon and the workers called off their blockade.

Meanwhile, workers Westeria Textile at Sreepur municipality area went out on demonstration seeking arrears and at blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Gargaria Masterbari.

Police tried to remove the protesters from the highway and at one stage they fired teargas shells and charged batons to disperse them.
