Four people were killed and nine others critically injured as a cement mixer truck ran them over on Friday morning in Karnaphuli Shah Amanat Bridge area of Bakalia on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway.
The deceased were Hasina Begum, 40, wife of Md Hossain of Satkania upazila, Nargis Akhter, 35, wife of Md Shahid, Shah Poran, 35, son of Dulu Miah of Comilla, and Nurul Absar, 45, son of Motahar Hossain of Patiya upazila.
The nine injured were Abdur Rahman, 40, Imran Hossain Sabit, 6, Anil Barua, 50, Abdus Sattar, 40, Sharmin Akhter, 23, Rigan, 33, Sifat, 16, Didar, 30, and Jahangir Alam, 45.
Md Faisal Kabir, a medical officer at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said that nine injured were admitted to different wards of CMCH and some of them were in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses said that the driver of the cement mixer truck had lost his control over the steering and hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, a rickshaw and the passersby at a roundabout in the area of Shah Amanat Bridge around 10:30am killing 4 people, including two women, on the spot.
Imran Hossain Sabit, a madrassah student, was admitted to neurosurgery ward of CMCH. From head to lower abdomen, his whole body was wrapped in bandages as his head, eyes, chest were severely damaged. The accident also killed his mother Hasina Akhter.
Sabit’s sister Nayema Akhter said that her mother and brother were looking for a vehicle on their way back to their residence when the truck hit them. Hasina died on the spot.
Injured Anil Kanti Barua, who works at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Chittagong, was undergoing treatment at CMCH. He told New Age that he met the accident while on his way to attend a marriage ceremony. He said that he suddenly heard a blast and after some time found himself on the ground.
Rahmat Ali, a local shopkeeper, said that the cement truck was entering from Amanat Shah Bridge into the city at high speed. But the driver lost control after getting off the bridge and then smashed passersby, a rickshaw and an auto-rickshaw.
Bakalia police officer-in-charge Pranab Chowdhury told New Age soon after the incident that the police arrested truck driver Md Zahir, 28, son of Abdul Hamid of Eidgah Bazar area of Halishahr and his two assistants Md Lal Miah, 32, son of Mofiz Mridha of Patuakhali Char Kajal, and Bablu, 52, son of Abdul Goni of Patuakhali Bauphal.
The police officer quoted the truck driver as telling them that the break of the truck had failed.
No case was filed till Friday evening.
In another incident, Sirajul Islam, 60, a transport worker, son of Mohabbat Ali of Chauddagram upazila of Comilla, was killed when a covered van ran him over in AK Khan area in the city around 4:00am.
The van ran him over as he was crossing the road. Soon after the accident, he was sent to CMCH where the duty doctor declared him dead, police said.
