Body of foreign ship captain recovered

The body of the foreign ship captain who went missing after slipping in the River Karnaphuli on Monday night was recovered from under a jetty of the Chittagong port on Wednesday morning.
The victim, Makopoulos Vasileios, 57, was a Greek national and the captain of Cyprus-flag carrier MV Erivinia which came from China. He went missing after slipping in Karnaphuli from his vessel docked in the port jetty around 8:00pm on Monday.
The port’s security officials recovered the body from near NCT terminal area at 9:45am on Wednesday. Crew members MV Erivinia identified the body of Makopoulos.
The body was kept at the mortuary of Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said Chittagong Port director (security) Lieutenant Colonel Md Abdul Gaffar.
He said that the body of the captain would be sent to his homeland on completion of formalities.
On Monday night soon after the accident, staffers on the ship could not rescue the captain immediately as he was caught in the ebb tide. Seven patrol and two turbo boats began a search after the incident.
A general diary was filed with the Bandar Police after the captain went missing.
The bulk carrier is carrying around 28,458 tonnes of materials, including steel pipes and machineries for Payra sea port in Patuakhali, said port
officials.
