Abahani Limited’s hope of winning the Premier Division Hockey League title were alive when they beat defending champions Mariner Young’s Club 2-1 in their Super Five last match at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium on Tuesday.
With the win, Abahani finished their campaign with 39 points, equal earning of Mohammedan Sporting Club, who played one match less.
Now Abahani’s fate of winning the title will depend on Thursday’s crucial match between Mohammedan and Mariner.
If the current champions beat Mohammedan, then all three teams will have equal 39 points and then the title will be decided in play-offs.
Mohammedan, who thrashed Sonali Bank 6-0 in the day’s first match, are slightly in superior position as they need only one point in their last match to secure the title.
Mariner, who seemed organised in the first half, took the lead in the last moment of the first half when Farhad Ahmed Situl scored from a penalty corner move.
However, Abahani made a brilliant comeback effort in the later half. Roman Sarker levelled the margin in the 44th minute when the midfielder hit the back of the net following a nice pass from Sarwar Hossain.
Sarwar earned a penalty stroke in the 50th minute when he was brought down by Mariner goalkeeper Ashim Gope inside the striking circle.
Ashraful Islam calmly converted from the spot to seal Abahani’s 13th victory.
Meanwhile, Mohammedan faced little trouble to beat Sonali Bank in their penultimate match.
Experienced striker Russell Mahmud Jimmy recorded a hat-trick while Gurjeendar Singh scored a brace and Rabbi Salehin scored the other goal.
