Abahani Limited threw the title race in Premier Division Hockey League wide open when they beat arch-rivals Mohammedan Sporting Club 3-2 in their Super Five match at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium on Monday.
With the win, Abahani also snapped MSC’s unbeaten record in the league and exacted a sweet revenge of their loss against the same opponents in the first phase.
Abahani now share the top place with Mohammedan in the table with 36 points, though the later have one game in hand.
In the match, Mohammedan came from behind twice but could not prevent their first defeat in 13 matches.
Abahani started the game brightly and took a deserved lead in the second minute with a tap-in from Malaysian Ahmed Tajuddin.
Indian Gurjinder Singh levelled the margin for Mohammedan with a brilliant reverse-hit seven minutes later but Roman Sarker restored the lead in the 20th minute.
Gurjinder again brought back Mohammedan into the match by scoring his second goal with a reverse-fit in the 38th minute.
But Roman Sarker’s 61st minute strike from a reverse-hit was enough for Abahani to break Mohammedan’s hearts.
