PCP, GJF protest at their activists’ arrest

Pahari Chhatra Parishad and Ganatantrik Juba Forum leaders on Sunday condemned the arrest of two of their fellows at Ashulia in Dhaka in connection with the murder of Rangamati’s Nannerchar upazila parishad chairman Shaktiman Chakma.
Demanding the release of the two activists, in a statement the leaders said police detained them without warrant of arrest or any particular reason.
PCP treasurer Sunil Tripura and GJF officer secretary Ripon Chakma were picked up by the Ashulia police from a public meeting on Saturday.
The arrestees went to Buribazar of Gazirchat area in Ashulia with a view to mobilising local people to hold a programme to mark the June 12, the day Hill Women’s Federation leader Kalpana Chakma was abducted in 1996.
Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity leaders thwarted the public event before handing Sunil and Ripon over to police, said the statement.
PCP and GJF claimed that the detention was politically motivated.
Shaktiman Chakma was killed in front of his office in broad daylight on May 3. The next day four other ethnic leaders were killed on their way to Shaktiman’s funeral.
