Police detained two suspects in the killing of Rangamati’s Nannerchar upazila parishad chairman Shaktiman Chakma from Ashulia of Dhaka on Saturday.
Ashulia police inspector Javed Masud told New Age that the detainees were Ripon Chakma and Sunil Tripura.
On May 3, at least three assailants shot Shaktiman Chakma, also vice-president of Jana Sanghati Samity-MN Larma, in front of his office at the upazila headquarters in broad daylight.
On the following day, unidentified attackers ambushed and killed UPDF (Democratic) chief Tapan Jyoti Chakma and four of others on Khagrachari-Rangamati Road at Bethchari while they were going to the funeral of Shaktiman Chakma.
JSS-MN Larma and UPDF (Democratic) leaders then blamed UPDF men for the murders while UPDF denied the allegation.
Inspector Javed Masud said the Ashulia police detained the suspects from Gazirchar area of Ashulia at about 3:00pm after they were asked by the Rangamati police.
The detained would be handed over to the Rangamati police, Javed added.
He, however, could not give detailed information on the detainees.
Hill Women Federation president Nirupa Chakma told New Age that Ripon Chakma is the press secretary of Ganatantrik Juba Forum, a UPDF-backed organisation, and Sunil Tripura is the treasurer of Pahari Chhatra Parishad.
She said she along with the two went to a public programme at Ashulia on Saturday.
In the afternoon, some JSS (MN Larma) activists turned up and asked them to halt the progamme.
The JSS activists called the police who detained Ripon and Sunil without warrant, she said.
