Mariner too good for Abahani

Abahani Limited’s title hopes in the ongoing Premier Division Hockey League suffered a blow when they lost to defending champions Mariner Young’s Club 1-5 in the last match of the group stage at on Tuesday.
With the defeat, Abahani remained in third position of the table with 27 points from 11 matches.
Mariner, on the other hand, reduced the gap with table toppers Mohammedan Sporting Club to
three points by securing their 10th win in 11 matches.
Mohammedan finished the first phase with 33 points by winning their all 11 matches.
Moinul Islam Kowshik scored a brace while Puskar Khisha Mimo, Nayeem Uddin and Malaysian forward Mohammad Julhairi, netted one goal each for Mariner.
Indian forward Baljit Singh pulled one goal back for Abahani.
Mariner took the lead in the 21st minute when Julhairi converted a penalty corner.
Kowshik doubled Mariner’s lead seven minutes later when he found the back of the net with a great reverse hit following a pass from Mimo.
Baljit reduced the margin a minute later when he found the back of the net after playing a one-two-one with Ruman Sarker.
Mariner made it 3-1 in the first minute of the second half when Mimo hit the back of the net with a neat drag following a pass from Nayeem.
Kowshik scored his second in the 54th minute before Nayeem completed the rout in the 65th minute.
In the day’s other match, Bangladesh Sporting Club thrashed Police Sporting Club 9-1.
The Super Five phase will begin on Friday.
