Businessmen at commercial areas of Barisal city such as Chawkbazar, Phallpatti, Kathpatti and Girja Mahalla started indefinite strike protesting against drive against encroaching footpaths in the commercial areas on Monday.

The businessmen alleged, police and city corporation staff initially started hawker eviction drive in the city and then started removing signboards of their business houses.

Shanaj Parvin, assistant commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police, said police with the help of Barisal City Corporation staff started the eviction drive as roads on those commercial areas are narrow and the businessmen blocking the footpath created obstacles to people’s movement.

‘So to make free and smooth movement of the Eid shoppers, the operation began after giving necessary warning and allowing them time to remove installations on footpaths,’ she said.

Golam Rouf Khan, BMP deputy commissioner, informed that  during the drive five hundred illegal hawker shops on footpaths and signboards creating obstacle on way of free public movement, were removed.

After that at least five hundred shops shut down protesting this drive from 1:00pm Monday and continued till this report.

Mrinal Kanti Saha, vice-president of Chawkbazar Businessmen Abscission,  said police without  serving any prior notice started the eviction drive and removed sign boards  of the business establishments.
