A suspected drug peddler was killed a gunfight between his accomplices and members of the Rapid Action Battalion in Kashiadanga area of Rajshahi early Thursday, the police said.
The deceased was Abul Hasan alias Hasan Ghatial was a son of Abdul Khaleq, a resident of Sonaikandi area of the city, said RAB-5, adding that he was wanted in at least sixteen cases filed on various charges including robbing, murder and drug dealing.
Tipped off that some drug peddlers were bringing in illegal drugs by water from India, a team of RAB-5 conducted a drive at the embankment no 5 on the River Padma in Nabanganga area around 12:30am, said RAB-5 deputy commander Major AM Ashraful Islam.
As the alleged peddlers became alert to the presence of the RAB members, the drug peddlers opened fire on the elite team.
This prompted the RAB members to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, Ashraful Islam said.
The RAB members arrested Abul who was shot in the line of fire while the others managed to escape.
When Abul was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, the duty doctors declared him dead, claimed Major Ashraful. The body was kept at the hospital morgue.
No RAB member was injured in the incident and one firearm, three bullets and 147 bottles of Phensedyl were recovered from the spot.
At least 82 people were reportedly killed in ‘gunfights’ across the country since January 1 this year.
On April 26, another suspected robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between members of the RAB and his accomplices in Charghat upazila.
