Hyundai Rotem of South Korea on Wednesday won the supply bid of 70 locomotives to Bangladesh Railway quoting Tk 2,679 crore.
The cabinet committee on national purchases approved the supply bid at a meeting, chaired by finance minister AMA Muhith, at secretariat in Dhaka.
The locomotives would be procured to improve rolling stock of the BR, said additional secretary Farouqe Ahmed of the cabinet division at a briefing.
Bangladesh Railway floated the tender for purchasing 70 metre-gauge diesel electric locomotives two years ago under a government-financed project.
Five companies — CSR Ziyang Co of China, CSR Sifang Co Ltd of China, Hyundai Rotem of South Korea, Vossloh Espana of Spain and Grindrod Locomotives of South Africa — took part in the tender.
The BR after evaluating the tenders proposed the name of Hyundai Rotem.
The total price for the 70 locomotives along with spare parts and tools was set at Tk 19.86 billion. With inclusion of VAT and relevant duty, it would stand at Tk 26.79 billion.
In 2006, the BR began its reform programme with the loan from the Asian Development Bank that has provided $2.81 billion including $360 million loan approved in February.
Farouqe Ahmed said the cabinet committee also approved procurement of diesel from Unipec Singapore Pte Ltd and PT Bumi Siak Pusakko Zapin of Indonesia at a cost of Tk 2,024 crore.
According to the energy division proposals, Unipec Singapore Pte would supply 1,80,000 tonnes of diesel at Tk 983 crore while PT Bumi Siak Pusakko Zapin would supply diesel at Tk 1,041 crore.
The energy division is procuring diesel to generate
additional electricity from the costly rental power plants for irrigation purposes in lean period.
At present, Bangladesh consumes more than 60,00,000 tonnes of petroleum products, including 41,00,000 tonnes of diesel.
