An accused in two cases of rape and a suspected robber were killed in separate incidents of reported gunfights in Feni and Mymensingh on early Wednesday.
The deceased in Feni, Musa Alam Masud, 38, son of Shah Alam of village Khushipur, was wanted in at least six cases, including one for murder and two for raping a housewife and a schoolgirl, police said.
The identity of the Mymensingh deceased, believed to be 29, could not be known until evening.
With the duo, at least 80 people were killed in ‘gunfight’ incidents across the country since January 1 this year, according to media reports.
The New Age Correspondent in Feni, quoting Daganbhuiyan police officer-in-charge Abul Kalam Azad, reported that they arrested Musa on Tuesday night and interrogated him.
Later, based on information extracted from him, police raided Khushipur area under Daganbhuiyan in Feni along with Musa at about 2:00am to arrest Musa’s accomplices and to seize illegal firearms.
As they turned up in the spot, Musa’s accomplices opened fire on the law-enforcers and Musa was shot, the OC said.
As the gunfight ended and his accomplices fled away, Musa was rushed to Daganbhuiyan Upazila Health complex where on-duty doctors declared him dead, he said.
He claimed that police seized a pistol and three bullets from the spot.
The New Age correspondent in Mymensingh, quoting the district detective branch officer-in-charge Ashiqur Rahman, reported that the 29-year-old suspected robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between detectives and robbers on a road in front of Baroihati Battala Araj Ali High School under Gaforgaon in the district at about 3:00am.
The OC said the detectives raided the area on information that the robbers were robbing vehicles and passers-by by felling tree logs on the road.
