One killed over football match dispute, 6 held

A young man was beaten to death by a group of assailants in Sylhet on Tuesday night in a dispute over a football match.
The deceased was identified as Nurul Islam, 26, son of Sayful Islam of village Chhatargram in Gowainghat upazila in the district, police said.
Local sources said that a group of assailants attacked Nurul near Pargana Bazar in Gowainghat upazila around 8:30pm while Nurul was returning home and beat him up , leaving with critically injured.
Nurul died on the way to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital after local people rescued him from the spot, the sources said.
Gowainghat police officer-in-charge Delwar Hossain said that the victim’s body was handed over to his family on Wednesday afternoon after a post-mortem examination was conducted at the SOMCH.
He said that the residents of villages Labugram and Nijdhar in Gowainghat upazila had clashed on Friday afternoon over a football match between the two villages.
‘Tuesday’s murder was a sequel to Friday’s clash,’ the police officer said, adding that six men from village Labugram were arrested on Wednesday afternoon for their suspected involvement in the killing.
