Bangladesh Premier League champions Abahani Limited ended their AFC Cup campaign on a sour note when they lost to Bengaluru FC of India 0-4 in their last Group E match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Wednesday.
With the win, Bengaluru secured their place in the Inter-zonal play-off semi-finals as the Group E champions after their local counterparts Aizawl FC beat Maldives’ New Radiant Sports Club 2-0 in Gwuahati, India in the groups other match of the day.
Striker Nishu Kumar scored a brace while Spanish forward Daniel Segovia and captain Sunil Chhetri netted one goal apiece to secure Bengaluru’s fifth win in six matches.
Bengaluru finished with 15 points while Radiant lost a great opportunity of qualifying for the next stage following a shocking defeat as they had to remain content with 12 points.
Abahani finished third in the group with four points from slotted six matches while Aizawl finished bottom of the table.
Chhetri, the captain of the India national team, was the architect behind Bengaluru’s comfortable win as the experienced forward not only scored but also assisted the other three goals.
Segovia gave Bengaluru the lead in the 12th minute when Chhetri ran past his marker Tutul Hossain Badsha before providing a low cross to Segovia, who made no mistake to send the ball home from centre of the box.
Nishu doubled the margin just four minutes later. Receiving a short pass from Chhetri, Nishu hit a grounder from top of the box that beat Abahani keeper Shahidul Alam Sohel.
Nishu netted his second in the 58th minute when Chhetri showed his quality once again and provided a defence-splitting chip to Nishu, who placed the ball into the bottom right corner.
Chhetri completed the rout at the hour mark with a neat placing from centre of the box.
Bengaluru FC 4 (Daniel Segovia 12, Nishu Kumar 16, 58, Sunil Chhetri 60) v Abahani 0
