Ishrak Mahmud Nafi and Afnan Mahmud Mahi will create a kind of record when they will play in the AB Bank Bangladesh Open, beginning at the Kurmitola Golf Course today.
Professional golfer Nafi and amateur golfer Mahi will be first siblings from Bangladesh to play in a major golf tournament.
Nafi and Mahi, however, are no strangers to golf as their father Mahmudur Rahman Chowdhury is now the acting director of the Bangladesh Professional Golfers’ Association.
Younger of the two brothers, Mahi is well known due to his good performance at junior level internationally.
Mahi, who is taking part in this tournament after getting an invitation from the hosts, has already achieved full golf scholarship in USA to play NCAA division golf for his excellent performances.
He has been a member of Alabama State University golf team since 2017 on a four-year contract.
Nafi, the elder brother, started playing golf 10 years ago and turned to be a professional in 2016.
He has played a number of Asian Development Tour and PGTI events and participated in a number of international amateur tournaments too.
After getting chance of playing together in an Asian Tour, both golfers expressed their excitement.
‘As only 40 top professional golfers from Bangladesh were supposed to play here, I thought I would not get a chance due to my raking,’ said 21-year-old golfer Nafi.
‘But I was surprised to get the call to attend the Asian Tour event as some of the players withdrew their names and I am extremely lucky.’
The Bangladesh Golf Federation also invited some amateur golfers including Mahi.
‘This is for the first time we will play together in an Asian Tour tournament,’ he said.
‘Our initial target will be to avoid the cut.’
