A man was beaten and hacked to death by a mob at Fulbari in Bogra on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Rubel Pramanik, 30, of Dakkhinpara of Fulbari.
Family members said the deceased was a police informer, who used to provide information to police on illegal drug trading.
He was killed by drug peddlers as he provided drug peddlers’ information to police, said his mother Jharna Begum.
Fulbari police inspector Amber Hossain, however, said Rubel was a listed extortionist and he used to stab people if they denied giving him money.
He was killed by angry locals for his misdeeds, the inspector said.
Police and witnesses said local people dragged Rubel out of his home at about 2:00pm and beat and hacked him indiscriminately, leaving him dead on the spot.
Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra for autopsy.
Bogra police additional superintendent Sanatan Chakrabarty said that Rubel was accused in three extortion cases.
Locals beat him out of anger, he said, adding that police arrived at the spot to rescue him but he was beaten to death already.
Rubel’s mother alleged that Rubel could not stay home for last few days as local drug peddlers threatened him to kill.
He came home Monday noon to take his national identity card when the drug peddlers stormed into his house, ransacked, looted and dragged him out and killed him, the victim’s mother Jharna Begum said.
