Relocation of the structures existing on the site of the Patenga Container Terminal would begin in the next week, said Chittagong Port Authority executive engineer Md Mijanur Rahman Sarker, also the focal officer of the project.
Sand filling, site cleaning, ground improvement and construction of box culvert, drains and site office are now going on, he added.
As a part of expansion of the country’s premier seaport to increase its capacity, Chittagong Port Authority is implementing the project at a cost of Tk 1,868 crore.
Engineering Corp of the Bangladesh Army is constructing the new container terminal on 37 acres of land between Chittagong Dry Dock and Boat Club at Patenga.
Bureau of Research Testing and Consultation of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology is the consultant for the project.
Mijanur said that some structures, including the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society base depot, a police check post, project office of Marine Fisheries, office of deputy commissioner (customs) and a tanker of Omera Oil company, were on the project site.
Earlier, the authority y decided to construct a multi-storied building near the site of the container terminal to relocate the establishments but recently they decided that Omera Oil Company tanker would be relocated on 2 acres of land near Bay Fishing and Oily Waste Treatment Plant.
Bangladesh Red Crescent Society base depot, Bangladesh Marine Fisheries project office and customs deputy commissioner’s office would be relocated behind the Incontrade Container Terminal.
Mijanur said that under the project, they would construct a 600 metre jetty with 3 berths on 32 acres of land, 220 metre dolphin jetty, 1,12,000 square metre RCC pavement, 2,128 sq metre container freight station shed, 6 feet high customs bonded wall, port office building, 1,200 sq metre mechanical and repairing workshop, 2,500 metre railway track, 0.75 kilometre 4-lane and 1 kilometre 6-lane road, security post, gate house, fuel station and labour shed.
A 420 metre long flyover would be constructed under the project for the airport bound vehicles to avoid traffic congestion for the container vehicles, he said.
Patenga Container Terminal will also have rail lines to carry containers to and from the terminal, which would be alongside a 200 metre Dolphin jetty for fuel oil shipments. Two of the jetties will have four ship-to-shore gantry cranes for container handling, while the last jetty will be multipurpose and handle container and bulk shipments, said the engineer.
Earlier, on January 20, the port authority handed over the project site to the Bangladesh Army.
Port authority secretary Mohammad Omar Faruk said that emphasis was being given on the Patenga Container Terminal as three other big projects –Karnaphuli Container Terminal, Laldia Multipurpose Terminal and Bay Terminal – might only be partly completed before 2021.
The construction work of the new terminal would be completed before the December 31, 2019 deadline, he said.
Once completed, the terminal would be able to handle about 0.45 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) containers annually. The terminal would also have a specialised dolphin oil jetty for unloading oil, backward yards having capacity to store 4,500 TEU containers, road and other facilities, said the secretary.
The secretary said that most advantage of the PCT would be that the ships taking berth in this facility could avoid a big turn in the Karnaphuli channel towards the main port. After completion, the army would hand over the terminal to the port authority.
CPA officials said that the terminal was being constructed after ten years of the last one New-mooring Container Terminal constructed back in 2007.
They said that the authority opted for direct procurement method instead of open tender aiming to accelerate the construction of Patenga Container Terminal in the port city to complete the implementation of the project by December 2019.
