An accused in a case of raping a minor girl and a suspected robber in the Sunderbans were killed in two separate incidents of reported gunfights between miscreants and Rapid Action Battalion in Chittagong and Bagerhat districts on Tuesday.
The deceased in Chittagong ‘gunfight’, Abdul Hakim alias Mintu, 30, son of Md Shamsul Alam, of Tegpara area under Banshkhali in the district, was wanted in several cases with Banskhali police station, including one for violating a 10-year-old girl on April 18.
The identity of the deceased suspected Sunderban robber, aged about 35, could not be known until 7:00 pm Tuesday.
With the two, the media reported deaths of at least 62 people in ‘gunfight’ incidents at different places across the country since January 1 of the ongoing year.
New Age correspondent in Chittagong, quoting RAB-7 assistant director (media) Mimtanur Rahman, reported that a team of RAB members conducted a drive at about 4:45 pm after they were tipped-off that Mintu was staying at Pekua area of Banshkhali.
Sensing the presence of RAB, Mintu and his cohorts opened fire on the elite force, prompting them to retaliate by firing, the battalion spokesperson claimed.
New Age correspondent in Khulna, quoting Sarankhola police station officer-in-charge Kabirul Islam, reported that the suspected forest robber was killed in a gunfight at Ambaria are of Shyala river under Sarankhola range of the Sunderbans in Bagerhat Tuesday morning.
The OC said local fishermen identified him as a member of ‘Rustam robber gang’.
