Eight-year-old Shumi Khatun in Bogra is the latest victim to have lost arm in the recent spate of road accidents due to reckless driving.
The child lost her left forearm when a stone-laden truck hit her while she was crossing a road in Bottola bus stand area in Sherpur upazila on Sunday afternoon, said Sherpur thana officer-in-charge Rafiqul Islam.
Shumi is the daughter of Dulal Kha of village Phultola under Sherpur and a Class I student of a local BRAC school.
Witnesses said the child was crossing the road about 1:00pm when a truck hit her, leaving her forearm almost severed from the body.
She also sustained injuries in the right hand and mouth.
Locals took her to Sherpur Upazila Health Complex where in duty physicians amputated her forearm.
In the afternoon, Shumi was transferred to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, said Bogra Chhilimpur police outpost in-charge sub-inspector Aziz Mandal.
The medical college vice-principal, Professor Rezaul Alam Jewel, said the condition of the child was now stable.
OC Rafiqul Islam told New Age that the child was sent to the hospital in an ambulance and they were busy on the occasion of a visit of health and family welfare minister Mohammed Nasim to the area.
He said that they already seized the truck as the unidentified driver-cum-owner left the truck in the Sherpur thana area and went into hiding.
He claimed that the driver-cum-owner was bearing the cost of treatment of the child through local owners association.
No case was filed in this regard, the OC added.
On April 17 transport worker Khaled Hasan Ridoy lost his right arm while he was travelling to Dhaka from Gopalganj in a bus that was hit by a truck.
