A month into their abduction, United People’s Democratic Front-backed Hill Women’s Federation central committee general secretary Monty Chakma and its Rangamati district unit general secretary Dayasona Chakma were released in Khagrachari Sadar on Thursday night.
‘We have come to know that they were released from captivity sometimes before 8:00pm on Thursday. We, however, could not establish communications with the two leaders,’ HWF president Nirupa Chakma told New Age.
‘The abductors called family members of the two leaders and handed the duo to them in front of APBN High School at Madhupur in Khagrachari town about 7:45pm, ‘said Michael Chakma, an UPDF organiser.
‘We are yet to know from the duo about their captivity,’ he said.
‘We are trying to establish communications with them,’ he said.
Khagrachari Sadar police officer-in-charge Shahadot Hossain Pito, however, said at 10:00pm that the police was yet to get any such information.
Unidentified criminals abducted the two leaders at gunpoint from Kudukchari in Rangamati on March 18.
The UPDF in a press release on that day had alleged that the attackers had come riding a vehicle of security forces and ‘during their operation, security patrol on Rangamati-Khagrachari road was intensified’.
Since their abduction, different hill organisations and left and progressive political bodies have been demonstrating across the country demanding their release.
